21 May, World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in partnership with UNESCO and a wide coalition of partners from corporations to civil society is launching the world campaign “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion”, aimed at engaging people around the world to Do One Thing to support Cultural Diversity and Inclusion.
SAGE Foundation and Centre for Management have partnered with the UNAOC for their ‘Do one Thing for Diversity’ initiative. Please forward this amongst your networks.
Following the adoption in 2001 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity the UN General Assembly declared May 21 as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
Why does diversity matters?
Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension.
Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development.
The 2012 campaign, by encouraging people and organizations from around the world to take concrete action to support diversity, aims:
- To raise awareness worldwide about the importance of intercultural dialogue, diversity and inclusion.
- To build a world community of individuals committed to support diversity with real and every day-life gestures.
- To combat polarization and stereotypes to improve understanding and cooperation among people from different cultures.
Join the worldwide campaign, “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion”, like the Facebook page and encourage your neighbors, your family, your friends and your coworkers to Do One Thing to support Diversity and Inclusion on the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21, 2012.
Every one of us can do ONE thing for diversity and inclusion; even one very little thing can become a global action if we all take part in it.
Ten simple things YOU can do to celebrate the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21, 2012.
1. Visit an art exhibit or a museum dedicated to other cultures.
2. Invite a family or people in the neighborhood from another culture or religion to share a meal with you and exchange views on life.
3. Rent a movie or read a book from another country or religion than your own.
4. Invite people from a different culture to share your customs
5. Read about the great thinkers of other cultures than yours (e.g. Confucius, Socrates, Avicenna, Ibn Khaldun, Aristotle, Ganesh, Rumi)
6. Go next week-end to visit a place of worship different than yours and participate in the celebration.
7. Play the “stereotypes game.” Stick a post-it on your forehead with the name of a country. Ask people to tell you stereotypes associated with people from that country. You win if you find out where you are from.
8. Learn about traditional celebrations from other cultures; learn more about Hanukkah or Ramadan or about amazing celebrations of New Year’s Eve in Spain or Qingming festival in China.
9. Spread your own culture around the world through our Facebook page and learn about other cultures
10. Explore music of a different culture
There are thousands of things that you can do, are you taking part in it?
How to join the 2012 campaign?
- “Like” us on Facebook to start a discussion on our wall, follow our posts and videos and take part in the photo and video contests. (facebook.com/DoOneThingforDiversityandInclusion)

Why are we here and what is the purpose of our life?
Why do some of us seek higher truths? Why do we at times feel compelled to improve ourselves, not only for our own sake, but for the sake of a higher cause that we can sense, yet barely see?
To get answers to these eternal questions, guests are invited to a thought provoking evening with Andrew Cohen, a truly remarkable spiritual teacher on evolutionary thinking and action. (www.andrewcohen.com) . His writings and teachings are destined to make a real difference in the world. He leads us to step beyond being, to becoming, to face our own bewilderment and invent a culture of higher consciousness.
Through his book “Evolutionary Enlightenment” which is hailed as a spiritual masterpiece, through his magazine EnlightenNext and through his retreats in different parts of the world, Andrew Cohen gives us the inspiration and the means to accomplish the greatest of all endeavors for the human spirit. We are living in a time of profound transformation. Cohen’s insightful teachings will empower us to co-create a future for our collective awakening.
Gerard Senehi works closely with Andrew Cohen and is a world-renowned mentalist and cultural change-agent with a passion for expanding our notions of what’s possible. (www.gerardsenehi.co.in)
As a mentalist, Gerard confounds, captivates, and uplifts audiences worldwide with his seemingly impossible feats. His work has earned the admiration of world leaders, celebrities and Fortune 500 CEOs, as well as the national and international media. Honored by his peers in 2008 with the Psychic Entertainers’ Association’s highest award, the Dunninger Memorial Award, he is regarded as one of the world’s best mentalists. The secret to his success lies in keeping people guessing, suspending normal conceptions of reality, as he walks an untraceable line between sophisticated illusion and paranormal powers. The captivating results were once described by New York Magazine as “tiny miracles . . . challenging both the credulity of believers and the unsmiling vehemence of skeptics.”
Centre for Management and SAGE Foundation have always believed in training heart centric leaders. We are inviting guests to an amazing memorable evening with Andrew Cohen and Gerard Senehi on “Evolutionary Enlightenment” on Saturday 15th September, 2012 at 6.00 pm in Mumbai. Due to the overwhelming response received, a full day retreat with Andrew Cohen will be conducted for serious seekers the next day.

Maya Shahani, Chairperson of Centre for Management and SAGE Foundation, participated at the UNAOC Forum in Doha on 11th December 2011, in her capacity as Vice Chairperson of Global Dialogue Foundation. Over 2,500 political and corporate leaders, civil society activists, youth groups, faith communities, research centers, foundations, journalists, ministers, and heads of state came together to agree on joint actions to improve relations across cultures, combat prejudice and build lasting peace.
Hosted by the ruling Emir of the State of Qatar, the Forum had among its attendees the High Level Group member from Qatar H. H. Sheikha Mozah, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilizations President Jorge Sampaio.
The UNAOC’s Forum in Doha was a milestone in the UNAOC’s existence. Under the theme ‘Intercultural Dialogue to Boost Development’, high-level debates on how advancing towards the goals of the UNAOC can contribute to foster sustainable development and, in particular, achievement of the MDGs, were conducted. The Alliance works in four program areas to support its projects. These areas are: youth, media, education, and migration.

Over 400 youth and 300 civil society organization representatives participated in the Forum. Through roundtables, workshops and debates, participants put their minds together to agree on joint actions and make pledges. The program featured project-specific working sessions, interactive discussions and debates, as well as provided a convening space for civil society organizations to present their exciting initiatives. One of the major outcomes of the forum was to increase and rely on youth participation for decision making.

Ms Shahani shared the stage with Mr. Gordon Brown, Former Prime Minister of UK , Beşir Atalay, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey,
HRH Prince El Hassan Bin Talal, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, UNAOC Ambassador, USA amongst others. In her capacity as the Vice Chairperson of Global Dialogue Foundation, Ms Shahani spoke about ‘Trust and Tolerance to Advance Development Goals’.
Centre for Management and SAGE Foundation have been identified by UNAOC as their officiating partners in India.
